When you look into mouth ulcers on the internet, a lot of the information you find is dedicated towards preventing these irritating little occurrences. However, as grand an idea as prevention is, it is really doesn’t provide relief for mouth ulcers that have already formed. If you are already suffering from existing mouth ulcers, what you really need to do is find information on mouth ulcer treatments. One thing to keep in mind when treating mouth ulcers is that there is a lot of conflicting information regarding both the cause of mouth ulcers and their treatment, so in some cases it becomes necessary to use a little bit of common sense, especially when considering implementing homeopathic or other at-home remedies.
Among the most commonly recommended treatments for mouth ulcers is also the simplest. Many dental health experts recommend simply gargling with warm, salty water several times daily when you are suffering from a mouth ulcer outbreak. The salt water disinfects, cleans, and seems to speed the healing process. Of course, if your mouth ulcers are particularly raw or painful, exposing them to salt water may cause discomfort, albeit temporarily. If you do choose to go this route in order to treat your mouth ulcers, do keep in mind that you should use warm water, but not hot. Hot water can actually exacerbate the problem of mouth ulcers.
Another highly popular and often recommended group of treatments for mouth ulcers are those that involve the usage of OTC antiseptic mouthwashes. These products disinfect your mouth, which prevents infection in mouth ulcers, and can also often prevent them from spreading and even speed up their healing. Generally, these popular mouthwashes are fairly inexpensive and fairly effective. However, one thing to keep in mind is that a common ingredient in both mouthwashes and toothpaste, called sodium lauryl sulfate, is an often-suspected contributor to the problem of mouth ulcers. Check the label of any product you are using in your mouth, and ensure that it does not contain SLS, especially if you are intending to use that product as one of your mouth ulcer treatments.
Finally, if you are suffering from mouth ulcers, you can enhance the effects of any treatment by avoiding hot (temperature) foods and drinks, spicy foods and drinks, and foods and drinks that contain excessive amounts of acid. All of these things are well known to contribute to mouth ulcers, and therefore should be avoided during the course of treatment.
